TIMVF Covers: NXNE 2024

This year’s NXNE (North by Northeast) was an unforgettable experience that reaffirmed Toronto’s status as a vibrant hub of music, culture, and innovation. As the TIMVF team and I navigated through the eclectic mix of performances, street fairs, and award shows, we were reminded of the unique charm this festival brings to our city each year.

Founded in 1995, NXNE was inspired by the success of Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW) and aimed to create a similar platform in Toronto. Over the years, it has grown into one of North America’s most influential music and arts festivals, showcasing a diverse array of talent and fostering connections within the creative community. Its roots in promoting independent and emerging artists have helped shape its identity as a festival that celebrates musicians of all levels.

This year’s venues included Handlebar, Paddock Tavern, Supermarket, The Bovine, Baby G, among many others. With most of the venues participating for the entire festival run, NXNE 2024 featured performances by over 300 artists. The diverse lineup included a mix of established acts and emerging talent, spanning various genres and styles. There were simply too many talented artists to name, but some of our team’s favourites this year included Laila, Dead Roots, Stardrop, Frank Mighty, and The Flamingos Pink.

To close off this year’s NXNE, the festival had its first Garage Band People’s Choice Award, with the ceremony taking place at The Rec Room. Alt-pop star Less Killjoy took home the big win. As always, myself and the team left wanting more and simply can’t wait for the festival to return in 2025. Until then, the memories of NXNE 2024 will continue to resonate, reminding us of the magic that happens when the city comes together to celebrate music, art, and community.
